Discovery Place KIDS-Huntersville is helping young learners get ready for their first day of school with Countdown to Kindergarten, a free community-wide program for rising kindergarteners and their families, on Friday, August 19, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.

This free community event promotes kindergarten readiness through a variety of programs that emphasize literacy, safety and what to expect in the classroom. For the event, Discovery Place KIDS-Huntersville is connecting with community partners to offer skill-building activities and information that children and parents will need in preparation for their first day of school.

Soon-to-be kindergartners and their families will be able to visit a mock classroom and meet local kindergarten teachers from CMS North Learning District, practice school bus safety with Gus the Bus and join CMS officials for special family readiness workshops at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. to discuss what families can expect in their child’s first 30 days of school.

Guests can also explore community resources and engage with hands-on activities like

· Free dental screenings with Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures

· Story Time with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library at 5:00, 6:00 & 7:00 p.m.

· Tutoring and educational resources from Learning Rx and Omega Learning

· Afterschool and extracurricular activities through the Girl Scouts, Lake Norman YMCA, the Huntersville Aquatic Center, and Lake Norman Performing Arts

· Setting up a college savings program with NC 529 Plan for the new Class of 2029

· Public safety and school safety demonstrations with Huntersville police, fire and rescue

· And much more!

Discovery Place KIDS-Huntersville will close at 4:00 p.m. on the day of its event for preparations and then will open the doors again at 5:00 p.m. for Countdown to Kindergarten activities. Countdown to Kindergarten is a free community event. Discovery Place KIDS-Rockingham will hold their annual Countdown to Kindergarten event on April 19 as well.
