Mike Mathews, the principal who opened Ardrey Kell High School in 2006, is leaving to take a human-resources job with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Mathews was principal of Providence High from 2000 to 2006. Both schools are in the southern suburbs and are strong academic performers.
His new job is executive director of human resources consulting support. It's one of four new jobs Superintendent Peter Gorman created in personnel, after eliminating 13 jobs.
Four smaller schools also got new principals Tuesday:
Barry Burford, who was principal of Cornelius Elementary, takes over Cato Middle College High, a 100-student school where juniors and seniors take community college classes while finishing high school.
Elaine Jones, an assistant principal at the alternative Morgan School, was promoted to principal there.
Dayna Sanders, an assistant principal at Greenway Park Elementary, becomes principal of Tuckaseegee Elementary.
Fabby Williams will take over the Business and Finance School at Garinger, one of five small schools on the eastside campus. He had been an administrator in the office overseeing eastern schools.
