MOORESVILLE Dr. Mehmet Oz, one of the most famous personalities from “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” will be in Mooresville May 1 to raise money and awareness for HealthReach Community Clinic.
How did the clinic snare such a name?
Oz is friends with the Mack family of Mooresville, whose financial contributions made the Charles Mack Citizen Center possible. John Mack is chief executive of New York-based Morgan Stanley & Co.
Established in 2003, HealthReach Community Clinic provides free medical, dental, chiropractic and prescription medication services to uninsured residents of the Mooresville, Troutman and Mount Mourne areas whose incomes are below 200percent of the federal poverty line.
Last year, the clinic handled about 2,800 patient visits and dispensed about 3,700 prescriptions at no cost to its patients.
Because of the poor economy, the number of residents seeking clinic services has doubled, while donations have remained flat, executive director Rory Crawford said.
Oz, a heart surgeon and best-selling author, is donating his time to speak to the community at 2 p.m. May 1 at the citizen center, 215 N. Main St. He will talk briefly about health and wellness issues and then answer audience questions.
In September, Oz will start his own syndicated daily talk show, “The Dr. Oz Show,” produced by Harpo Productions and distributed by Sony Pictures Television.
Advance tickets are required for his Mooresville appearance. Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope and a check for $25 per ticket to HealthReach Community Clinic, P.O. Box 1265, Mooresville, NC 28115. Donations are tax deductible.
Anyone donating at least $100 per ticket will receive preferred seating and be invited to a private reception with Oz.
