Music That Chills

I thought it might be fun as we’re entering these hot summer months to discuss one of my favorite topics- music.  Specifically, music that gives us the chills.  Hopefully all of us have experienced this at one point or another.  A song, musical passage, or lyric that never seems to fail to make your hair stand up a little bit, inspire your creativity, or just blow your mind.

With the advent of YouTube I’m finding that more and more often you can find videos of songs online- so I’m going to try to share some of my chill-inspiring favorites with you, complete with links so that you can hear them.  If you’re not familiar with these songs I hope perhaps one or two of these will do the same for you.  I also hope you will share some of your favorites with me!

By the way-  as we proceed I recommend that you don't read the comments below the YouTube clips.  Normally idiots with way too much time calling each other four letter words dominate YouTube.  You've been warned.  :)

This song tells of a dancer that the narrator has dreams about.  It begins very slowly and dreamlike, with different sounds being added to the mix- but at the 2:30 point the song pretty much literally explodes as the narrator expresses the desire “to just leave my body for the night” and experience the dancer in person.  That 2:30 mark makes my hair stand on end every time.

This song features a singing saw that kicks in at about the :43 second mark.  This totally adds to the emotional power of the lyrics and, to me at least, pushes this past a song with great lyrics to a chill inducer.  Here are the complete lyrics, they're all too great for me to pick and choose:

What a beautiful face

I have found in this place

That is circling all around the sun

What a beautiful dream

That could flash on the screen

In a blink of an eye and be gone from me

Soft and sweet

Let me hold it close and keep it here with me

And one day we will die

And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea

But for now we are young

Let us lay in the sun

And count every beautiful thing we can see

Love to be

In the arms of all I'm keeping here with me

What a curious life we have found here tonight

There is music that sounds from the street

There are lights in the clouds

Anne's ghost all around

Hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me

Soft and sweet

How the notes all bend and reach above the trees, trees

Now how I remember you

How I would push my fingers through

Your mouth to make those muscles move

That made your voice so smooth and sweet

Now we keep where we don't know

All secrets sleep in winters clothes

With one you loved so long ago

Now he don't even know his name

What a beautiful face

I have found in this place

That is circling all round' the sun

And when we meet on a cloud

I'll be laughing out loud

I'll be laughing with everyone I see

Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all

(yeah… it’s kind of a weird video)

I think the power of this song is in understanding that it was inspired by the death of singer Wayne Coyne’s father after a drawn out illness.  He’s referring to the way so many of us view our own parents as “superheroes” of some sort while the music drives home the sense of loss from watching your heroes become just too weak, with a steady, heavy, pounding drum.

Tell everybody waiting for superman

That they should try to hold on as best they can

He hasn’t dropped them, forgot them, or anything

It’s just too heavy for superman to lift.

Anyway, these are the first three “chill inducers” I thought of.  Not necessarily party dance music, but music that really generates emotions in me.

Of course, just as each person likes different foods and smells we each have different musical tastes. What songs give you the chills?
