There's a story on charlotte.com today about an S.C. teenager who collapsed and died at band camp yesterday (http://www.charlotteobserver.com/local/story/885246.html). The reasons aren't in, but of course the extreme heat and humidity are being looked at.
I think it's ridiculous that marching bands and football teams (and I'm sure other fall sports) make these teenagers work for hours at a time in the blazing August heat. Every year, some senseless death happens at these all-day practices. And they are all day -- often 4-5 hours in the morning and back again in the afternoon.
Now, I'll about doing your best and working hard, but this is excessive. If the pros want to do it, then fine. But making teens do it is cruel.
