I can only imagine...

I can only imagine…

I almost set myself on fire last night cooking dinner.  Making tacos.

I was buzzing around, starting supper, trying to unload and reload the dishwasher and empty the trash, all at the same time.  I was a multi-tasking maven, pausing between my various chores to wash my hands…

I stirred the ground beef around a few times, not really paying attention to what I was doing. That is, until a bright flash and orange flames snapped me back to reality.  I was still clutching the paper towel I dried my hands with after my last pass at the sink…  Poof!  Too close to the gas burner…  I didn’t freak out; I simply dropped the burning bundle on the counter and smothered it with the spatula.  Wow…  This mindless, meaningless moment could have been catastrophic.  And I never saw it coming.

I can only imagine…

I’ve heard those words so many times since our journey began…

One year, ten months and two weeks later, it is still very hard for us to acknowledge that a split-second distraction brought us to where we are today.  The prospect of living a life without our son was an impossible, unimaginable circumstance…  Until it happened to us.

What I CAN imagine is this…

A day when no life is needlessly lost because a driver chose to take a call, make a call, read a text, send a text, open an email or respond to one, all while trying to drive a motorized vehicle…

Friday, April 30, 2010 was declared national ‘No Phone Zone Day’ by the Oprah Winfrey Show.  Will you accept her challenge (and mine) and make your car a no-phone zone?  Give it a try, at least for one day?  Be honest…of the last six telephone calls/texts you received or made while driving, how many were so urgent they couldn’t wait?  Please!  What have you got to lose?

If you’ve already made this wise decision, you have the heartfelt gratitude of our family…  My request of you is this: take it one step further tomorrow and ask someone else to do the same!

I no longer multitask behind the wheel, and after last night, behind the stove…

Don’t wait until it happens to you…

Wishing you sunshine and hope…tg
