Kindness Matters

I pulled up to the drive-through window of my favorite restaurant, ready to execute today’s mission…  Last Sunday, John and I committed to perform 7 over 7: seven random acts of kindness over seven days…

I paid for my order and told the young lady I also wanted to pay for the person in line behind me.

She was young, probably close to the age of Gracie; I’d never seen her before…maybe she was new…

She handed my card and receipt back, saying “They only ordered a large coffee.”  She shrugged and gave me a look that said ‘Big deal.’

I was suddenly, inexplicably embarrassed that I only paid for a cup of joe…

I sought to regain my composure… “Well, it’s the intent that matters, right?  Not the amount?   I would have paid for a catering order if that’s what it was.   Maybe another day…”

I drove away deflated, trying to figure out what had gone wrong with my plan…

Absolutely nothing.  The point was to randomly do something nice for someone-which I did.   Hopefully their coffee was a little more enjoyable because of it…

Nevertheless, the cashier’s comment kept circling my mind...

In a flash of insight, I realized how often I’ve done that very thing myself…times when I’ve blurted out the first thought that popped in my head, made a face or maybe rolled my eyes, thereby trampling someone else’s good intentions…

How much better would this world be if everyone went out of their way to be nice on purpose?

This experience served as a great reminder…kindness matters.  It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture, cost a lot of money or make a big splash…   It just needs to come from the heart…

After this seven day period comes to an end, we’re going to continue doing our part…

Wishing you blessings and hope…
