Grocery deals to stockpile

Stockpiling is great, but you need to know when to sttop. A good rule of thumb is to have one unopened item per family member in stock. So, for example, 4 family members – 4 unopened boxes of toothpaste.

What is stockpiling?

When an item your family uses regularly can be purchased for at least 60% off full price due to a sale and/or coupon, buy as many as you have coupons for. Warning: Initially, building a stockpile can actually make you spend more on your weekly groceries, because you still need to buy most of your essentials AND stock up on sale items. Remember All items have sale cycles. Having multiples of an items allows consumers to take advantage of the best time to buy.

How do I Stockpile?

Identify items that are good stockpiling items for your family - think non- perishables!

Toothpaste/toothbrushes

Shampoo

Lotion / Body wash

Shaving items

Cleaning /Paper products

Canned goods

Cereal/lunch snacks

Storage / Trash bags

Dog food

Rice/Pasta

Condiments

Baking items – sugar, flour Wipes / Diapers

Water / Juice (bottled)

Share your unused coupons with others to collect multiple coupons of the items you need.

Almost always if an items is a BOGO (Buy One Get One) and you have a coupon for it - it is a stockpile item. Coupon Events weeks are key for stockpiling on toothpaste and deodorant.

When to STOP

A good rule of thumb is to have one unopened of an item per family member in stock. So 4 family members – 4 unopened boxes of toothpaste

Where to Stock Pile?

Consider space and temperature. Garages are great, because temperature fluctuations don't affect cereal or cleaning supplies. Buy storage containers with lids that fit securely, and use a permanent marker to list what's inside. If a garage isn't an option, use furniture that's already taking up space, such as a bedroom dresser that's underused. The deep drawers are perfect for storing items. Build shelves for canned goods and cleaning products.

Consider a deep freezer. Shop around and find the best size for your family. (Remember to calculate the added energy cost.) Shelves and other internal compartments make it easier to organize your frozen food, ensuring nothing gets "lost" and goes bad.

Stock Piling Best Practices:

Write the expiration date on perishable items in magic marker so it's easy to see. Put new items at the back of the shelf and move older stuff forward.

Organize your containers similar to your pantry. For example, put all baking supplies together.

Know the shelf life of your dry stockpile. Some items list the expiration date on the packaging. If not, check out FreshPantry in the iTunes store. For less than a dollar - know when to toss or keep items.
