Send Your College Student Off in Style Without Breaking the Budget

by-Mary Stephenson

It's that time of year again!  Time to get the kiddies back to school and our college students off to their new adventures on their campus.  Along with all the excitement comes the job of searching for all the supplies that are needed to outfit your student.

This is the perfect weekend to shop for these items, because it's Tax Free Weekend!

In this tough economic time, more and more stores are fighting for your business with terrific back-to-school sales.  It seems that everything is reduced this year!  There  are deals on everything from mini refrigerators to lamps, sheets and towels and even great deals on computers!

Did you know that you can find computers and software pricing online at sites like and print the specific information and take it with you to a Best Buy store or a Wal-Mart and they will match the price!  No need to pay shipping costs!

I did some investigating by walking around at the large superstores, such as Wal-Mart, Target, and I even paid a visit to the Dollar Stores.  There are some real bargains out there!

If your college student is living in the dorm, they typically won't be needing to bring any furniture except the occasional side chair and possibly a futon for overnight guests.  These are perfect items to get inexpensively or previously owned, if possible.

Gently used couches, chairs, futons, coffee tables and items of that type are available for very little money at either Goodwill stores or at almost every garage sale.

This cool futon is available at Target!

No dorm room would be complete without a mini-refrigerator

What a bargain at $ 69 at Wal-Mart!

There are some super bargains at the Dollar stores on kitchen gadgets & equipment, as well as cleaning supplies & aluminum foil, paper towels, paper napkins, etc.

One thing I like about the paper napkins at the dollar store is they are actually a little smaller.   That makes it easier on the environment, because you're using less paper.

Perfect for your "green" conscious college student.

I find they are plenty big and the entire package is only $1!

Please remember, when you're shopping, to pick up some extra school supplies at these bargain prices for local children who cannot otherwise afford them.

Moms Charlotte is supporting Classroom Central that collects school supplies for low-income students throughout the Charlotte region. Last year, more than 80,000 students received free supplies.  Find out drop off locations Click Here

Or, bring them with you when you come to the Southern Women's Show being held September 17 through the 20th at The Park (formerly the Charlotte Merchandise Mart)!  There will be a drop-off box there for these items.

At these prices you can really load up and help less fortunate children.
