Unmask!: The Concord Library will host Unmask!, a myth-busting event that will tackle questions like, “Could a penny dropped from the Empire State Building really kill someone down below?” The event will be held at 4 p.m. June 15 in the library’s meeting room.
If you plan to attend, you’re encouraged to bring a smartphone or MP3 player to test out the speakers you’ll be designing from everyday recyclables. Additional hands-on experiments will be available as well as a variety of freaky facts to discuss. For details, call 704-920-2054.
Summer concert series: The Castaways will perform at 6 p.m. June 20 on Locust’s town center as part of the town’s summer concert series. The series has been held as an annual event for five years and has featured bands from genres such as country, beach music, bluegrass, Christian and today’s popular hits. The concert series ends with fireworks after the final show in September. For details, go to https://locustnc.com/park-news-events/.
Greenway detour: The state has closed a detour around construction work on North Tryon Street for people who use the Mallard Creek Greenway. Work on the southbound bridge recently was completed, and the detour was closed.
Now construction has begun on the northbound bridge over Mallard Creek, and the DOT will create a new route around the work for greenway users. The new detour will use a pedestrian beacon – basically a highly visible traffic signal for cyclists and pedestrians – to provide safe pedestrian and bike passage through the bridge construction zone.
The state will link the Mallard Creek Greenway path to the temporary highway crossing near Ortho Carolina via permanent ramps on the outside shoulders of the northbound and southbound traffic lanes. These ramps will remain after the bridge project is completed next year.
“The crossing will be operational as soon as the greenway detour can be constructed,” Brett Canipe, an engineer with the state Department of Transportation, told University City Partners recently.
The state is installing a similar crossing on University City Boulevard between UNC Charlotte and student housing just south of Mallard Creek Church Road.
After-school and preschools
Be part of upcoming database: We’re starting to build a database that will help readers locate preschool and after-school programs from around the region.
Readers will be able to look up preschools and after-school programs based on the child’s age, program director’s name, county, street, email address or city.
Providers are invited to add their information. Fill out the form at: http://bit.ly/cltafterschool.
The database of preschool and after-school programs will be available in July, when we publish our annual back-to-school information in the Community News sections.
Providers have until June 30 to enter their information. There is no charge.
