Earth Day celebration
The town of Matthews, along with Habitat and Wildlife Keepers, will host an eighth annual Earth Day celebration, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Stumptown Park, 120 S. Trade St., Matthews. Registration for the town’s litter sweep begins at 8 a.m. The celebration will feature live music, eco-friendly businesses and services, food vendors and more. Habitat and Wildlife Keepers will accept batteries, CFL light bulbs, aluminum pull tabs, corks, egg cartons, inkjet cartridges, eyeglasses and cell phones for recycling. Pike Nurseries will host two free classes on harvesting tomatoes at home on Saturday, 12630 N. Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden volunteers will lead the walk 9 a.m.-10 a.m. Tuesday, 6500 S. New Hope Road, Belmont. Stroll through the gardens, Meadowood Walk and Persimmon Trail to observe nesting patterns and learn about bird counts.
