The winner: Are your little ones having a hard time holding a handful of playing cards? Try this: Put 2 plastic lids together lip-side out. Stick a paper fastener through the center of both lids and open ends. Place cards between the lids. You are ready to play. Dian Nemeth, Pineville
Washing delicates made easier
I love delicate materials but dislike hand-washing them. I place the items in a large pillowcase, fold over the open end and secure it with two safety pins. I set the washer to use cold water, delicate/slow speed and use a liquid detergent formulated for hand washables and follow the wash with fabric softener in the rinse cycle. Afterward, shake out your clean items and dry flat or on a padded hanger or line. This has been successful even for some items that are labeled dry-clean only like linen, rayon, washable silk and blends. I wouldn’t suggest this for wool or cashmere, notorious for shrinking in any water. This can be a great money and time saver and reduce the need for dry-cleaning chemicals. Melinda Johnson, Charlotte
