This downtown Mooresville store is the perfect place to find gifts, accessories and furniture you won’t find at the mall. You can’t miss the parrot statue perched near the cash register, but you might have to look twice to realize it’s actually a fan. Owner Colleen Stern didn’t look far for inspiration or inventory. Her mother owns the original Porch Parrot in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.
On the Porch Parrot’s history: Stern’s mother, Carolyn Jenks, opened the Porch Parrot in Ocean Isle Beach two years ago. “I’m amazed by the number of people I’ve met in Mooresville who’ve been to my mom’s shop in Ocean Isle,” Stern says. Operating the beach boutique became a family affair – Stern visited on weekends to help her mother, father, and sister. In January she contemplated opening her own location in the Lake Norman area. By July her dream was a reality. On opening in downtown Mooresville: Stern and her husband Donald live in Mount Ulla – they moved there 11 years ago from Saratoga Springs, NY. Stern researched areas when determining where to open her store. Many Lake Norman towns appeal to small business owners, but Mooresville had the most favorable first impression. “I wanted a Main Street atmosphere, and the renovations in downtown Mooresville are great,” Stern says. On treating customers as friends: Be sure to visit the entire store. This includes the kitchen area that offers customers free drinks and snacks, and the back sitting room, where you can browse more store items or relax in an Adirondack chair while listening to ocean waves, compliments of a tranquil sound machine. Receipts are hand written, gifts are carefully wrapped, and introductions are made. “It’s nice to know people on a first-name basis,” Stern says. The Porch Parrot, 240 N. Main St., downtown Mooresville. Open 10 a.m.-5 pm. Tuesdays - Saturdays 704-662-0771.
