While it will be held at different venue this year, the 21st annual Checkered Ball remains an important event designed to help the local nonprofit Hinds’ Feet Farm, which serves people living with traumatic brain injuries.Scheduled for Jan. 28, this year’s gala fundraiser is at The Ritz-Carlton, The Urban Garden, and will feature gourmet food, dancing, live music and an open bar.More importantly, it will give people an opportunity to support a worthy cause. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1.4 million U.S. residents suffer a traumatic brain injury every year. Car accidents are responsible for about 20 percent of those injuries. It was a traffic accident that forever changed the life of Philip Foil and the lives of his family members. Foil was just 16, and while driving home from Concord High School, he was run off the road and struck by another vehicle. While he survived, Foil’s brain was severely injured, which impacted his speech, memory, mobility and balance.“Everything that you are and that you know can change in the blink of an eye,” says Marty Foil, Philip’s big brother. The facility is located on 36 acres of rolling woods and open pasture on Black Farms Road in Huntersville. The nonprofit’s professional staff works with members and their families to create personalized, holistic therapeutic programs.Marty, who is the organization’s executive director, says the programs help members improve their cognitive, physical, social and vocational abilities, which boosts confidence and self-esteem.
