Dudeapalooza

Just thinking about Jon Wilson makes me laugh because he does such a good job as the fun host of WCCB-TV’s “Wilson’s World.” But what really makes him stand out in Charlotte’s competitive media world is his big heart and his creativity.

His creativity was really on display yesterday when he dropped off a press packet at the Observer that really got my attention, and that of the Observer’s security guard. We both didn’t quite get why the press release included a piece of metal pipe. Then I got to my desk and there was a funny message from Wilson saying that it wasn’t a pipe bomb, it was a business card holder.

But what I really loved is that the press release was held together with duct tape instead of a staple. But the best part was the event itself, which sounds like such a great idea: Dudeapalooza on March 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, 4150 Yancey Road.

It’s a pop-up market featuring more than 25 area vendors selling a range of vintage, handmade and found items all aimed towards men. Items include old car parts turned into lamps, vintage concert and sports T-shirts, original Star Wars figures, beard oils, skateboards, leather wallets, bow ties, old school video games and more.

“There have been pop-up markets in Charlotte for a few years, and I love them! It’s always fun,” Wilson said in the press release. “They’ve started to lean more towards throw pillows and old lacey things. This is guy stuff!”

During the event Goodwill’s tech store “The Grid” will be taking donations of old tech items to be recycled securely. Food and beverages will be available for purchase and the UNC Tarheels basketball game will on on the big screen. Admission is free.

I would love to attend to stock up on gifts for all the important men in my life, but I’ll be at the Femfessionals event that night. It cracks me up to think that at the same time on the same night, Dudeapalooza and Femfessionals will be taking place. Wilson could have so much fun doing a show about that, but I guess he’ll be a little busy that evening.
