Five Must-Haves for Summer

Sure, it’s August, which may technically be nearing the end of summer, but given the weather and the temperature patterns of late, I’m confident we won’t be seeing the sweltering heat depart until at least October (if we’re lucky).

So, with that in mind, here are a few items that have been nothing short of miraculous this summer in keeping me looking and feeling purty in the walking-on-the-surface-of-the-sun weather.

Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint: I discovered this delicious product via Birchbox recently, which is a testament to the power of sampling. I was dubious when I ripped open the little packet and squeezed out the shiny, oil-free, SPF 20 cream. I ended up loving the just-right consistency so much, I found myself rationing the rest of the samples until my full-size product could arrive. It’s sheer but offers buildable coverage with just the right hint of illumination that has garnered me numerous compliments. And it’s water-resistant without clogging pores.

TanTowel On the Glow Daily Moisturizer: For someone who loves beauty products as much as I do, I’m surprisingly lax in practice. This is especially true when to comes to applying self-tanner. I start out with the best of intentions for even application, but end up with horribly streaky popsicle legs. On the Glow is the most effective, most natural self-tanning cream I’ve ever used. The results are subtle - more subtle than most other products (the smell isn’t quite as offensive either), but for those of us with Casper legs, that’s for the best.

Fresh Sugar Plum Tinted Lip Treatment: A very wise friend told me about this addictive product over lunch a few months ago, and I just got around to trying it now. As soon as I realized the error of my ways, I came clean to her, and she did her very best to not say “I told you so!” As I’ve mentioned before, I am a lazy beauty product lover, in this case meaning that I fail to apply and reapply lipstick and gloss. Any product that will tint my lips and moisturize (and protect from the sun) gets an A+ in my book.

Lush Dirty Body Spray: My love of Lush products continues unabated with this body spray, which is anything but floral and cloying. I am not a girly-girl fragrance lover, and this natural blend of Tarragon oil with spearmint, thyme and lavender is just perfect for keeping the summer funk in check.

Redken Color Extend Sun Solar Screen SPF 12: My fab hair stylist Amy Swaney at Shine Salon* turned me on to this product to protect my scalp and my colored locks this summer. As Amy says, you put sunscreen on your skin, why not on your hair? True that. I also love that I can coat the heads of my anti-hat-wearing children too.
