From dressing Peruvian socialites and celebrities to designing for the big screen, designer Luis Machicao knows the ins and outs of the fashion world. Originally from Peru, Machicao now resides in Rock Hill and has been designing clothes for 25 years. This past year his latest collection was shown at New York Fashion Week. He’ll be debuting his newest collection closer to home for his third appearance in Charlotte Fashion Week. His show is Sept. 24.
How would you describe your design style?I’m very eclectic. But, of course, I’m influenced by Chanel and Christian Dior. I try to be avante garde with a touch of elegance. My dresses are all very well tailored and accentuate all of the right places of a woman.
What can people expect from your new collection? The collection is called Ice Princess. I used a lot of silver and metallics. It’s also my 25th anniversary as a designer so it’s my silver anniversary. The collection this year is very minimalist and this time I will only be showing cocktail dresses.
What’s next after Charlotte Fashion Week? The next day I’m leaving to go to Peru for 10 days to shoot pictures for my catalog. We’ll be shooting the catalog at Machu Pichu. I’m also working on designing wardrobes for a couple of movies. And before the end of the year I’m showing my collection in Paris and Milan for private customers.
