He’s worked with everyone from Naomi Campbell to Madonna and Kanye West, but a near death experience has this Charlotte style icon focusing his current efforts on something other than fashion. Known around town for his work at Coplons and other upscale boutiques in Charlotte and LA, Jordan McGhee still regularly styles friends and former clients for weddings and other major events, but thanks to his traumatic car accident, he’s now also working on starting a non-profit to help get people medical supplies. But he’ll always have one foot in fashion. McGhee is also working with Laura Vinroot Poole on House Account, a Charlotte based app that connects users to boutiques throughout the country.
Herb and Felicia Gray
By day they both dress for corporate America, but by night Charlotte power couple, Herb and Felicia Gray dress to the nines. Marred eight years, Felicia, 44, and Herb, 46, are active in the Queen city – serving on boards like the Harris Y, Opera Carolina and the Harvey Gantt Center, and attending more than twenty black tie events a year. No little black dresses for Felicia though, who likes to shop online and in consignment stores. They do have one new shared accessory – a burping cloth. The couple just celebrated the birth of their first child. “I keep a towel on me while I give her a bottle so I don’t have to change my outfit,” Herb laughs.
Barrie Benson’s personal style is much the same as the design aesthetic she’s become well known for: classic southern charm with a dose of modernity. “My whole philosophy is that your house and wardrobe should reflect one another and your personality,” says Benson, who was recently named one of the South’s top tastemakers by Garden & Gun. “A lot of my ‘southerness’ shows. I love pattern and color. Even when black is completely in, I still wear color even in New York City when you’re not supposed to.” Next up on the always-fashionable (and friendly!) designer’s to-do list: designing the interiors for Sam and Mary Celeste Beall, owners of Relais & Chateaux property Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee.
