Nights are cool at Highland Games

If arid days and excessive heat are scorching your dreams for a summer getaway, think about heading up to Linville next weekend: Organizers of the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and Gathering of the Scottish Clans want you to know that there's plenty to see and do once the sun goes down on MacRae Meadows.

That's the venue Thursday through next Sunday for what is considered the largest Scottish heritage festival in the United States. This is the 53rd incarnation of the celebration, held at the mountain – at 5,964 feet, one of the highest parts of the Blue Ridge. John Bordsen, Travel Editor
