Grand Strand Freedom Fest is Sept. 11-12
Freestyle Music Park – the former Hard Rock Park – and a Myrtle Beach tourism group are staging a patriotic music festival intended to draw tourists to the Grand Strand. Grand Strand Freedom Fest, set for Sept. 11-12, will commemorate the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The festival will kick off Sept. 11 with a free Concert for America by the Long Bay Symphony at La Belle Amie Vineyard, just off S.C. 90, at 1120 St. Joseph Road, Little River, S.C.
Sept. 12, the event will be based at Freestyle Music Park. The daylong festival will feature a concert that evening by country music star LeAnn Rimes. Additional entertainment will include afternoon concerts by Charlie Floyd and Southern Express, Jeffrey Allen Edwards and Southern Blues, and '70s star Billy Joe Royal.
Beginning at 1 p.m. Sept. 12, visitors to Freestyle Music Park can watch a parade featuring area high school marching bands and Rolling Thunder and other veteran-, police-, fire and rescue-oriented motorcycle organizations. Patriotic exhibits and memorials will dot the walkways through the park.
Co-sponsor for the two-day event is Business Owners Organized to Support Tourism.
Tickets for Sept. 12 at the theme park – $54.99 per ticket (plus tax) – include park admission and reserved seats to the Rimes concert. Tickets are $24.99 plus tax for park admission without reserved concert seating. Tickets purchased for this event include a free second-day admission to Freestyle Music Park. Brazilian steakhouse opens
Bertha Singleton left me nearly speechless after I asked if the chicken was good at Gauchao. It turned out that Singleton, who works at a beachwear store near Gauchao, has been going to the Brazilian restaurant ever since it opened Aug. 7.
Gauchao is at 2602 N. Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach. The traditional Brazilian steakhouse featuring 15 varieties of beef, pork, chicken and sausage. Gauchao has a salad bar that is a canvas of color featuring the usual suspects, asparagus, artichoke hearts, heart of palm, mozzarella and more.
Lunch costs $12.95, except on Saturday and Sunday when it's $15.95. Dinner costs $21.95. The dining room is cozy and tastefully elegant. Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, to 11 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Details: 843-267-9278. Johanna Wilson, (Myrtle Beach) Sun News
$10 menu available at Twelve
If you haven't been to Twelve, this would be the time to go. It is called Twelve because it is in Unit 12 at the Oasis Shopping Center, 2520 U.S. 17 Business in Garden City Beach, S.C.
And not long ago, the cool and classy restaurant started a $10 menu. I haven't tried items on the $10 menu yet, but the food is delicious. I ordered the baked brie, as an appetizer, for $9.95 and the Asian short ribs for $19.50. I ate dinner off of those two items for three days. No kidding.
The items for $10 include chicken Parmesan, Atlantic salmon, shrimp scampi and barbecue pulled pork and onions. The dish highlights the marriage of tender pork and sauteed onions cooked in a slightly sweet, spicy sauce. It is served over egg noodles. Hours: 5-10 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Details: 843-651-3222.
