Franklin, in Western North Carolina, holds its 14th annual Pumpkinfest on Friday and Saturday.
It starts at downtown at 3 p.m. Friday, with free hayrides and treats by local merchants.
The signature event is the "World Famous Pumpkin Roll," which starts at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Competitors roll all varieties of the orange objects down a ramp and onto Franklin's steepest street. The first to reach the finish line gets $100. You can bring your own pumpkin or buy one downtown. Registration starts at 9 a.m.; the event ends at 2:30 p.m.
Other events Saturday include a pumpkin-carving contest (8:30 a.m. registration, a pie-eating contest at noon), and a cooking contest; games; and a costume contest/parade for kids. There's also live entertainment.
