Friday night music in the mountains

The town of Sylva, southwest of Asheville, is bringing back free outdoor “Concerts on the Creek” series on Friday, May 31-Aug. 30. The 7:30-9:30 p.m. concerts at the Bridge Park Pavilion are strong on bluegrass, but some performers play country, blues, beach or rock ’n’ roll. The first Friday features the Rye Holler Boys (traditional bluegrass and mountain gospel). A highlight will be the June 14 appearance by Unspoken Tradition, a bluegrass band from Cherryville. Tribute concert at Flat Rock Playhouse

The Flat Rock Playhouse is offering “A Tribute to Sting and The Police” at its downtown Hendersonville facility at 8 p.m. May 30-June 1. The band, featuring vocalist Michael Murnoch and Ryan Guerra (who has been in previous Playhouse musical-tribute performances), will play hits by the Police and its vocalist Sting (“Message in a Bottle,” “Don’t Stand So Close to Me,” “Every Breath You Take,” etc.).
