Looking for a great Main Street to stroll in the Piedmont? It's hard to top Belmont’s, according to the 2015 Great Places in North Carolina awards program, sponsored by the N.C. Chapter of the American Planning Association.

Belmont was one of seven locales singled out for honors.

Also singled out for having a great Main Street:

West Jefferson (Jefferson Avenue)

Asheboro (Sunset Avenue)

New Bern (Middle Street)

Goldboro’s Center Street was recognized as a “Great Main Street In-the-Making.”

In two People’s Choice categories, with almost almost 40,000 North Carolinians voting online for their favorite greenway and historic rehabilitation, honors were given to:

Roanoke Rapids’ Roanoke Canal Trail as a great greenway

Kinston’s 200 N. Queen Street as a great historic rehabilitation.

The comments of the judges, largely urban planners, noted that “Main Street Belmont is a special place, retaining its classic small town look and feel while buzzing with economic vitality. Its rich cultural assets, family-friendly entertainment, and active local living only add to the energy of the area.”
