Storms punched through the Charlotte region Sunday, splitting trees, crushing vehicles and downing power lines. Much of the damage was in east and south Charlotte, where trees fell on at least two houses and thousands of residents were without power. Officials said the first of two strong storms began in Lincoln and Catawba counties, and an unconfirmed tornado was reported southwest of Newton at 2 p.m. The second storm developed over the Charlotte area about 2:30p.m., bringing nickel-sized hail and over 2inches of rain in southern Mecklenburg. In Tega Cay, S.C., lightning caused a fire at the former home of onetime Charlotte Hornets owner George Shinn. Officials say we can expect more hit-and-miss showers and thunderstorms into the weekend. Staff Reports
