Oct. 10, 2007: National Enquirer reports that Edwards had an affair with a woman who worked on his campaign.

Oct. 11, 2007: Edwards denies the Enquirer report. “The story is false. It's completely untrue, ridiculous,” he said.

Dec. 19, 2007: Enquirer reports that Hunter is pregnant with Edwards' child and has moved to the Chapel Hill area, as has former Edwards campaign aide Andrew Young, who is married with a family. Hunter and Young post online statements saying Young is the father of the unborn child.

Feb. 27, 2008: Hunter's baby is born in Santa Barbara, Calif.

July 22, 2008: Enquirer publishes a story claiming that its reporters caught Edwards meeting Hunter and her baby at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on July 21.

July 30, 2008: Edwards avoids reporters and declines to answer Observer questions in Washington.

July 31, 2008: Observer obtains birth certificate for Hunter's baby, and it lists no father.

Aug. 1, 2008: Enquirer says Hunter and Young were paid as part of a coverup.

Wednesday: Enquirer publishes blurry photograph claiming to be Edwards holding Hunter's baby.

Friday: Edwards admits to having an affair but says he is not the father of the baby.
