Suspicious bag blown up outside mosque
Police have blown up a suspicious backpack outside a Texas mosque and arrested a man who claimed it contained a bomb. Austin police Lt. Cedric Hudson says 46-year-old Azzam Baytie threatened the North Austin Muslim Community Center on Sunday. The Austin American-Statesman reports that police said Baytie also claimed to have a gun. Authorities X-rayed the backpack and found electronic parts inside. They destroyed it as a precaution.
Rice discusses relations with Kazakhstan
U.S. efforts to build closer ties to this energy-rich former Soviet republic are not meant to undermine Russian influence in Central Asia, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Sunday. U.S. gains need not mean Russian losses, she said. Foreign Minister Marat Tazhin said his country's relationship with the United States was “stable” and had “strategic character.” Kazakh ties with Russia, he said, are “excellent” and “politically correct.” Asked by a reporter whether he considered his country to be in a Russian “sphere of influence,” Tazhin said no and that he believed such a question was of interest mainly to academics and to journalists.
Tropical Storm Norbert strengthened well off Mexico's southern Pacific coast Sunday and threatened to become a hurricane in 24 hours, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. The storm could become a hurricane by today. But its northwestern path was taking it farther from land, said Jamie Rhome, a hurricane specialist with the Miami-based center.
Russian troops on Sunday began dismantling positions in the so-called security zones inside Georgia that they have occupied since August's war, Georgian and EU officials said, a sign Russia will fulfill its pledged pullback. Moscow faces a Friday deadline for pulling back its troops under the terms of a deal brokered by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
A baby was found alive by rescuers after spending four days in a pool of mud following flash floods that killed at least 41 people in central Algeria this week, a local official said Sunday. The state-run APS news agency said the 4-month-old baby appeared in good health after being discovered late Saturday and had been handed to a family while authorities looked for its parents.
