Russia plans to deploy missiles near Poland
Russia will deploy short-range missiles near Poland to counter U.S. military plans in Eastern Europe, President Dmitry Medvedev said Wednesday.
In his first state of the nation speech, Medvedev blamed Washington for the war in Georgia and the world financial crisis and suggested it was up to Washington to mend badly damaged ties.
Medvedev also proposed increasing the Russian presidential term to six years from four — a change that could deepen Western concern over democracy in Russia and play into the hands of his mentor, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who has not ruled out a return to the Kremlin.

A son of Osama bin Laden was denied asylum by Spain on Wednesday after deciding he had not met the conditions necessary for him to remain. Omar Osama bin Laden, 27, flew to Spain earlier this week and remains in a transit area at Madrid's Barajas Airport, an Interior Ministry official said. He has 24 hours to appeal the government's decision. Officials would not elaborate or discuss the younger bin Laden's reasons for seeking asylum. Omar Osama bin Laden is a metals trader who had been living in Cairo with his wife. He has not renounced his father but has said he wants to be an “ambassador for peace” between the Muslim world and the West. Associated Press

Pregnant women and young children should avoid eating meat from wild game killed with lead bullets, North Dakota health officials are recommending. The recommendation is based on a study released Wednesday that examined the lead levels in the blood of more than 700 state residents. Those who ate wild game killed with lead bullets appeared to have higher lead levels than those who ate little or no wild game. The elevated lead levels were not considered dangerous, but North Dakota says pregnant women and children younger than 6 should avoid eating venison harvested using lead bullets. Associated Press

A jogger attacked by a rabid fox ran a mile with the animal's jaws clamped on her arm and then drove herself to a hospital, authorities said. The Yavapai County sheriff's office said the woman told deputies she was on a trail near Prescott on Monday when the fox attacked and bit her foot. She said she grabbed the fox by the neck when it went for her leg but it bit her arm. The woman wanted the animal tested for rabies so she ran a mile to her car with the fox still biting her arm, then pried it off and tossed it in her trunk and drove to the hospital. The sheriff's office says the woman is receiving rabies vaccinations. Associated Press
