Cabela’s new store in Fort Mill drew a crowd of hundreds of customers for its official store opening Thursday morning.

The outdoor goods store is hosting grand opening events all weekend, including free giveaways. Cabela’s will offer classes in gun safety, backpacking, camping and fly fishing. In addition to its hunting, camping and fishing gear, the store includes a deli, a full-service boat shop, an indoor archery range and other features.

The latest Cabela’s -- located near Carowinds at 1000 Cabela Drive -- is 104,000 square feet, about one-half the size of the company legacy stores, which typically attract customers for hundreds of miles. The next closest Cabela’s stores are in Greenville, S.C., and Garner, N.C.

Nebraska-based Cabela’s operates about 64 stores across North America and has announced plans to open an additional 21 locations over the next three years, including 13 in 2015.

The company, which is publicly traded, reported fourth quarter earnings that were down 15.9 percent year-over-year in February, thanks mostly to increased spending on advertising and promotions. But a boost in merchandise, ammunition and firearms sales helped drive up quarterly revenue 7.2 percent compared with the same period a year prior.
