Excavation work has begun on one of the newest additions to uptown’s skyline, Greystar’s 32-story Ascent apartment tower at Third and Poplar. Plans call for more than 300 units and about 3,200 square feet of retail at its base facing Romare Bearden Park. The retail space will likely include a restaurant.

Greystar isn’t the only company planning a new uptown tower. Childress Klein plans to start construction on a 392-unit high-rise tower above the Mint Museum this year, while Grubb Properties and Novare are planning a second SkyHouse tower on North Tryon Street.
