The North Carolina Utilities Commission has approved construction of two natural gas-fired units at Duke Energy’s Sutton complex near Wilmington.
The units, which will also be able to run on diesel fuel, will have a total generating capacity of 84 megawatts. Duke will retire three older gas units at the site by the time the two new plants come online in mid-2017.
Duke retired coal-burning units at Sutton in 2013.
The commission approved the project on Monday. Duke filed cost estimates for the project under seal.
