The ride-sharing company Zipcar has launched service on the Davidson College campus.

The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to students, faculty and staff ages 18 and older, as well as to members of the community 21 and older, Zipcar said in a statement Tuesday.

Zipcar said it will offer those affiliated with the college a joining fee of $15 this year, and rates for the company’s vehicles on campus start at $7.50 an hour and $69 a day. After the first year, members pay an annual fee of $25, the company said. Gas, insurance and up to 180 miles of driving a day are included in Zipcar’s rates.

The service offers a mobile application that allows users to make reservations, lock and unlock vehicles and honk the horn. Reservations can be made via Zipcar’s website.

ZipCar said it is initially offering two vehicles on campus, a Ford Focus and a Ford CMAX.

The new Davidson Zipcar service is also part of the company’s “Students with Drive” grant program, which is co-sponsored by Ford. The program awards winners $25,000 in scholarships, cash and Zipcar driving at the end of the year. More information is available on the program’s website.
