Duke Energy says its nuclear power plants in the Carolinas set company and industry performance records last year.

The 11 units ran at a capacity factor of 94.2 percent, their best performance in more than a decade, compared to the national average of 91.9 percent.

Capacity factor is the percentage of electricity a unit generates compared to how much it would produce if it ran nonstop.

The three units at the Oconee plant in South Carolina ran at a 98 percent capacity factor in 2015, a plant and industry record, Duke said.

The Catawba plant’s unit 1 had its longest continuous operating run last year, while the Brunswick, Harris, McGuire and Robinson plants each set records for the amount of power they generated in a quarter-year.
