Athletic Republic teams up on new facility

Athletic Republic has partnered with Carolina Courts to offer youth sports performance training programs at the facility of indoor basketball and volleyball courts under construction in Indian Trail.

Athletic Republic, which operates a Pineville center among its 165 centers internationally, is a leader in an industry that promises to improve kids' speed, agility and strength, and help them avoid injury. It will lease 1,200 square feet and often use one court at 43,000-square-foot Carolina Courts.

Athletic Republic hopes to add two or three centers in the Charlotte region. This deal allows it to add one without spending on a new building. It also sees potential to tap into new customers; it struggles to attract local basketball and volleyball players.

Co-founders Ron Esser and Scott Chitwood expect Carolina Courts to open Jan. 3 with five convertible basketball/volleyball courts. They wanted sports performance training professionals to be on-site to work with players from the elite travel teams they plan to run, Chitwood said. "We want to do more than just an AAU schedule," Chitwood said. "This is about player development."
