Charlotte airport No. 10 in U.S. passenger traffic
The Charlotte airport was No. 10 among U.S. airports for domestic passenger traffic in the first half of this year, and US Airways ranked fifth among airlines for total passengers, according to federal data released Thursday.
Nearly 8 million passengers boarded planes for domestic flights at Charlotte/Douglas International from Jan.1 to June 30, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported. That's up 4.7 percent from about 7.6 million in the same period last year, when Charlotte ranked 12th among airports.
US Airways – which operates more than 80 percent of flights in Charlotte – carried almost 28 million passengers on domestic and international flights in the first half of this year. That's down 4.8 percent from the same period last year, but US Airways remained No. 5 among U.S. airlines for total passengers – behind United and ahead of Northwest.
Among the top 10 airlines, only Southwest, AirTran and JetBlue – Nos. 1, 8 and 9 for passengers – reported an increase in traffic from the first half of 2007 to the same period this year.
