Charlotte Douglas set record in 2013 for number of passengers

More travelers used Charlotte Douglas International Airport in 2013 than any previous year, airport officials said Tuesday, continuing more than a decade of growth.

A total of 43.5 million passengers used Charlotte Douglas, up more than 5 percent from the total in 2012. That’s up from 23 million passengers a decade ago, in 2003.

“Our location, low costs to airlines, commitment to first-class customer service and strong tenant partnerships are key factors in our success,” Interim Aviation Director Brent Cagle said.

More than three quarters of the passengers using Charlotte Douglas are connecting from one flight to another and passing through the terminal, rather than starting or ending their journeys in Charlotte. The airport has the highest share of connecting passengers of any major airport.

Charlotte Douglas ranked as the eighth busiest airport in the nation last year, measured by the number of passengers, and sixth busiest for the total number of flights. The airport averaged 714 daily flights in 2013.
