Krispy Kreme turns to pizza boss for next CEO

Winston-Salem-based Krispy Kreme Doughnuts has tapped the president of Papa John’s Pizza to be its next chief executive officer, the company said Tuesday.

Tony Thompson will succeed Jim Morgan, of Charlotte, who has led the doughnut company since 2008. Morgan will stay with Krispy Kreme as executive chairman of the board of directors.

“Tony’s background, accomplishments, professionalism and commitment to excellence all are a perfect complement to the culture, mission and values of Krispy Kreme,” said Morgan, in a statement.

Before Papa John’s, Thompson worked for Scott’s Miracle-Gro, Conagra Grocery Products and Gulf Coast Coca-Cola.

Thompson’s appointment is effective June 1.
