Piedmont Natural Gas Chairman and Chief Executive Thomas Skains earned $3.1 million in fiscal 2014, the Charlotte-based company said in security filings.
His total compensation rose about 3 percent from 2013, when Skains earned about $3 million.
Skains, the Charlotte Chamber chair, earned a base salary of $868,000 in 2014. He also received stock awards worth $1.1 million and about $800,000 in performance-based incentives.
Piedmont’s executive compensation was included in a proxy filing in advance of its March 5 annual meeting in Nashville, Tenn. The company serves more than 1 million customers in the Carolinas and Tennessee.
Piedmont’s $144 million in profit in 2014 was up 7 percent and its earnings per share, $1.85, up 3 percent.
The company added 14,000 customers last year and took a 10 percent stake in the $5 billion Atlantic Coast Pipeline from West Virginia into Eastern North Carolina.
