Homebuilder Green Street Cottages just started its first phase of construction of a community of energy-efficient houses west of Charlotte.

The Villages at Cramerton Mills will include a total of 500 homes when finished, according to a statement from Green Street Wednesday. The community will be a walkable, mixed-use development with apartments, homes, restaurants, retail and office space. It’s located off Hamrick Road, near the Cramer Mountain Club golf club and about 17 miles west of uptown Charlotte.

The homes will be 65 percent more energy efficient than a typical new home, the builder said. Homes will also be certified through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Zero Energy Ready Homes program.

The first phase of construction consists of 64 three- and four-bedroom homes ranging in size from 1,800-3,500 square feet, the builder said. Homes start in the $290,000s, and standard features include oversized front porches, 10-foot ceilings and granite countertops.

A grand opening of the community will take place Dec. 3 starting at noon at 310 Hamrick Road. It will include free food, entertainment and giveaways.
