Uptown’s newest office tower has an official start date: Friday, Aug. 14.
That’s when Portman Holdings and Trinity Partners plan to “break ground” on 615 South College, a 19-story office tower planned next to the Westin hotel. The building is planned to go on top of a parking garage, so there won’t be literal ground to break.
The ceremony next week is scheduled to include Gov. Pat McCrory and Charlotte Mayor Dan Clodfelter.
Portman expects to complete the 370,000-square-foot office building by late 2016. The existing structure of the parking deck will help speed construction, the company has said.

Uptown’s office construction market has come back since the recent recession. Babson Capital Management is building a 25-story tower at 300 South Tryon, and Crescent Communities is planning to start work soon on a 27-story tower at Stonewall and Tryon Streets, to be called Tryon Place.
