Uptown is in line to get another apartment tower, as developers move forward with plans to build a second SkyHouse building on North Church Street.
Novare Group and Grubb Properties co-developed the first SkyHouse tower, a 24-story, 336-unit project that’s nearing completion at North Church and 10th streets. Next to the tower, a parking deck that will include retail spaces and amenities for tenants is under construction. A tower crane is set up on the site, which is expected to soon host the second SkyHouse.
“We are continuing to work through final approvals with Mecklenburg County and other stakeholders and expect to be underway on the second tower before the end of the year,” said Novare Group spokesman Thornton Kennedy.
The first tower is now leasing, and renters should start moving in during the coming weeks.
When finished, the two towers will bring more than 1,000 new residents to the north end of uptown, which has so far lagged behind the explosive growth of uptown’s south side. Combined, the two SkyHouse towers are the largest apartment project underway uptown.
Animal clinic VetweRx is the first retail tenant announced for SkyHouse, and will take more than 3,000 square feet of space on the ground floor. Other retail spaces are available for rent, and a grocer is one of the tenants the developers are targeting.
