Combination hotel-apartment project planned in north Charlotte

A company that rents long-term hotel rooms and furnished apartments is planning a 150-room development in north Charlotte, according to plans filed recently with the city.

WaterWalk Hotel Apartments is seeking to build on a 5-acre parcel on University Executive Park Drive, near West W.T. Harris Boulevard. The land next to a Japanese restaurant is vacant, and currently zoned for office development.

The company rents fully furnished hotel suites and apartments. Rent for the apartments includes all utilities, a gym membership, and a washer and dryer. The company also rents unfurnished apartments. For 30 or more nights, a 1-bedroom unit rents for $89 a night (That’s $2,679 a month).

According to the rezoning request, WaterWalk is seeking to build, “Up to 150 corporate housing units made up of a combination of hotel and residential dwelling units.” The buildings would be up to four stories. Charlotte City Council is set to hear the rezoning request in October.

Here’s WaterWalk’s description on its website: “WaterWalk Hotel Apartments is the latest offering from the team that founded Residence Inn, Summerfield Suites and Candlewood Suites. WaterWalk takes the best of these hotel concepts, adds the space and comfort of an apartment, and the result … the perfect offering for those traveling more than a few nights.” Also: “Whether you require an apartment for one week or one year, we have either furnished or unfurnished apartments to accommodate your needs.”

The first WaterWalk property opened in January in Wichita, Kan. The company is planning another three dozen properties nationwide.

The company is also planning a WaterWalk hotel-apartment on Arrowpoint Boulevard, near West Arrowood Road.
