Topgolf, which operates golf, eating and drinking entertainment complexes, is looking to open its first Charlotte location at Whitehall Corporate Center in Steele Creek.
The golf company and property owner American Asset Corporation are seeking to rezone a 15-acre site off West Arrowood Road at I-485, west of South Tryon Street.
“When this rezoning petition was initiated Topgolf was not involved,” said Colin Brown, a Charlotte attorney representing the petitioners. “Topgolf is now committed to the site.”

The entertainment complex would bring 500 jobs to the currently vacant site, a Topgolf representative said.
Topgolf had been in negotiations with the owners of the mostly vacant Coliseum Center about locating on Independence Boulevard, but those talks fell through.
City staff said they have concerns about the size of signage Topgolf is seeking at the site, but City Council members seemed supportive.
“I like the fact that it is very family friendly, and we need more entertainment in that area,” said LaWana Mayfield, a Democrat, who represents the area. City Council will vote on the rezoning request next month.
Not familiar with Topgolf? It’s not a typical golf course. Here’s their description: “Topgolf is the premier golf entertainment complex where the competition of sport meets your favorite local hangout. You can challenge your friends and family to addictive point-scoring golf games that anyone from the hopeful pro golfer to your neighbor’s 7-year-old kid can play year-round. Just picture a 240-yard outfield with dartboard-like targets in the ground. The closer to the center or “bull’s-eye” you get and the farther out you hit your microchipped balls, the more points you receive. Score even bigger with Topgolf’s extensive food and beverage menu that is sure to impress even the pickiest foodies. It’s not golf – it’s Topgolf.”
