Uptown’s newest park is about to open.

A dedication ceremony for First Ward Park is set for Dec. 8, a Tuesday. The park is expected to be the centerpiece of a major redevelopment of First Ward.

On the morning of Dec. 8, local dignitaries will hold the dedication. From noon until 7 p.m., officials will hold park tours with music and hot chocolate, according to a memo from county manager Dena Diorio on Monday. At around 5 p.m., the park’s holiday lights will be switched on.

In April, the county expects to hold a larger grand opening ceremony for First Ward Park, which is located across from ImaginOn on East Seventh Street.

Developer Daniel Levine’s company, Levine Properties, is building the park, which Mecklenburg County plans to purchase once construction is complete. Levine Properties is also building an apartment building and parking deck nearby, and plans two hotels and an office tower around the park as well.
