Two developers are planning to build townhouses near Park Road Shopping Center, according to plans filed with the city.
The developments show the Park Road corridor becoming more dense and urban, and will offer for-sale housing in an area that is set to see a major influx of new rental apartments.
Here’s a quick look at the two plans, both of which were recently filed with the city and will be up for rezoning hearings in January before Charlotte City Council. The Park Road corridor is on the cusp of a boom, with Grubb Properties planning a mixed-use development and new apartments at Abbey Place and Pollack Shores building a new apartment building several blocks further south.
▪ East Woodlawn Road and Halstead Drive: Richter Development LLC is planning to build 49 townhouses on the south side of East Woodlawn Road, at the intersection with Halstead Drive. The area is occupied by a half-dozen single-family houses. Early plans show the townhouses grouped in six buildings, with internal streets connecting them.

“I’ve been looking at it for years and working on it for about 10 months,” said Dennis Richter, talking about the 2.6-acre site. He said the area is attractive because it’s close-in and walkable, and there hasn’t been much for-sale housing built. The development would be called The Towns at Madison Park.
▪ Park Road near Hillside Avenue: Selwyn Property Group is planning to build 19 townhouses on a site on the west side of Park Road, just north of Hillside Avenue. The 2.2-acre site is largely vacant, occupied by a single-family house and trees. Preliminary plans show the townhouses – which would be a maximum of three stories, grouped in five buildings.
