A plan to build a new, seven-story apartment building at South Boulevard and Poindexter Drive is moving ahead with no opposition, and is poised to add more density to the Lynx Blue Line light rail corridor.

The Bainbridge Companies applied to rezone the 1.6-acre site last year for apartments. The area is (still) seeing an explosion of growth, especially of new multifamily housing.

At a hearing last week, Charlotte City Council members didn’t raise any questions about the Bainbridge plan, and no neighbors showed up to voice concerns. City Council is set to vote on the plan next month, likely approving the apartment and clearing the way for building. City planning staff is recommending approval of the plan.

Construction is expected to start in the late summer. Here are the basics of what the Bainbridge plan would include:

▪ Up to 210 apartment units.

▪ The building could be up to 84 feet tall, with five stories of apartments above two floors of parking.

▪ High ceilings and direct access to ground-floor units, to help “activate the street.”

▪ “Pocket plazas” and seating areas facing the light rail and South Boulevard for pedestrians.

The apartments would be joining a slew of redevelopment that’s remaking the South Boulevard corridor. Check out the map below for a few of the nearby plans in progress.
