There are two new hotels in the works in Charlotte – near the airport and in SouthPark – according to rezoning requests posted Friday.
The hotels would add to the city’s rapidly growing hotel stock and expand the inventory of rooms beyond uptown, where most of the growth has been centered.
Here are the two plans. They’re both up for a City Council hearing on May 16, and could be voted on at the group’s June meeting.
▪ New airport hotel: A developer is planning to build a 190-room hotel near Charlotte Douglas International Airport, on a 5.5 acre site at the northwest intersection of Little Rock Road and Wilkinson Boulevard. That’s near the airport’s new entrance road, and would be minutes away from the terminal via shuttle. The hotel would have surface parking and a swimming pool.

The rezoning request was filed by Hotel Airport Partners, which corporate records show is affiliated with Tara Investments, a Charlotte-based hotel developer with properties in Ballantyne, Nashville, Savannah and Charleston.
▪ A new hotel in SouthPark: Across town, a developer is planning a 170-room hotel on Rexford Road, in addition to the Marriott SouthPark on site. The new hotel would be at the intersection with Roxborough Road, on land that’s currently used for surface parking, and would include new structured parking.
JWM Family Enterprises, a company that owns and develops Marriott hotels, filed the rezoning request. An architectural drawing shows the building as an AC Hotel, which is a “European-inspired” Marriott brand.
