One of the most prominent apartment developers and operators in Charlotte is looking to build a slightly different kind of rental in South End: Townhouses.
According to preliminary plans filed with the city, the 0.15-acre site at 1710 Camden Road, adjacent to the newly opened Camden Gallery complex, is being considered for rental townhouses. The small site would probably accommodate 10 or fewer units.
Houston-based Camden Property Trust, which developed Camden Gallery, Camden Southline and numerous other apartments in Charlotte, is behind the project. Will Smith, Camden Property Trust’s director of real estate investments, said plans for the site are preliminary and could change. He said the company is still considering a “multitude of ideas” for the parcel.

Rental townhouses would represent an interesting shift in direction for Camden, which has typically operated large apartment buildings with hundreds of units in Charlotte.
The South End project would be the second townhouse development Camden is working on in Charlotte. Nearby, at South Boulevard and Morehead Street, the company plans to build 28 rental townhouses next to its Camden Grandview apartment building. The townhouses would have access to the apartment building’s amenities.
