A developer has filed a rezoning request that would allow a new mixed-use development in an area of SouthPark that’s seeing rapid growth.
The plan, filed recently by owner American Asset Corporation, covers a 5.25-acre site at 6010 Piedmont Row Drive South. The land, behind office buildings on Fairview Road, is currently occupied by a two-story parking deck.
The rezoning plan (available online at www.rezoning.org), calls for up to:
▪ 125,000 square feet of office space.
▪ 75,000 square feet of shops and restaurants.
▪ 400 multifamily residences, such as apartments.
▪ 300 hotel rooms.
American Asset Corp. couldn’t immediately be reached for more details Wednesday. A previous rezoning plan filed in 2014 for the site would have allowed a similar mixed-use development, but it was withdrawn before Charlotte City Council voted.
SouthPark has been undergoing a major growth spurt, leading to concerns about traffic as the area gets denser.
Charlotte City Council will vote on the proposed new development after public hearings in the coming months.
