A self-storage facility is planned for south Charlotte, adding to a growing wave of self-storage projects in the city.
A rezoning request filed recently for 10609 Johnston Road, near Pineville-Matthews Road, would allow a 105,000-square- foot, climate-controlled self-storage facility. The 0.72-acre site is currently occupied by a one-story building that’s a taekwondo school.
The Berry Companies filed the rezoning request. The company has developed apartments, single-family houses and self-storage facilities throughout South Carolina.

City Council changed city zoning rules last year to allow self-storage in mixed-use districts instead of just the industrial districts that self-storage had largely been limited to. Since then, a half-dozen new self-storage projects have popped up, planned for uptown, West Morehead Street, Central Avenue and 10th Street, among others.
