A 60-acre retirement community is set to break ground this week in Matthews.

Called Windsor Run, the first phase of the project will include 216 independent living apartments and a 50,000 square foot clubhouse and amenity center, set for completion in early 2018. Baltimore-based Erickson Living is developing the project, on McKee Road near Weddington Road. A sales center is already open on the site.

Whiting-Turner Contracting Company is the general contractor for Windsor Run, and Lantz-Boggio Architects is the project architect.

Windsor Run will ultimately include continuing care and on-site medical care in addition to a planned total of 900 independent living units, Erickson Living said.

The project was initially proposed in 2007, but was put on hold during the recession.
